Fall 2021 Session Update
We hope you are staying busy, productive, and well and are enjoying what is left of summer.
As you know, we have been looking forward to reopening our Shepherd Center for a fall session. Classes were planned and teachers secured, but the Covid virus had other plans. There have been a few cases among the teachers and children here at Trenholm Rd. United Methodist Church, so the Church Session feels that it would be better if we delay the start date for our next session. At this time, they don’t want any group using the Leisure Ministries Building until at least October 1, which would mean that we would have to shorten the session. That, of course, affects the length of the classes, which would cause the teachers to omit material that they had planned to include. A few have already let us know that they would prefer to wait until we can offer a 9-week session.
Presently, the Board feels that we should wait to see if reopening at some point this fall is wise. Hopefully, in September we will all have a better understanding of the virus situation in our area and can plan accordingly.
We will keep you informed about our future plans. In the mean time, we are hoping to schedule a few Zoom classes for the fall. We so miss learning new things, making lovely items, exercising our bodies, making sweet music, and sharing great stories. But most of all, we miss seeing YOU!
The Shepherd’s Center of Columbia is one of about a hundred centers across the country which are affiliated with the Shepherd’s Center of America.
Grounded in the 23rd Psalm, this interfaith organization was founded as a means for older adults to continue to stretch their horizons, be contributing members of society, and help each other. It supplements the work of local congregations, providing opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. The members are the planners and leaders of all programs.
The Shepherd’s Center is open to all persons, but focuses on those who are age 50+. It is intercultural, interfaith, and interracial.
We welcome you to become a part of our schedule of activities. We provide classes on many topics, so we feel you will find something of interest to you. You may visit one time before becoming a member.
We appreciate that Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 provides meeting space for our classes.
Class registration cost is $35.00 per session, which allows you to take as many classes as your time will allow. You are welcome to join any class with an available chair. Feel free to change your schedule if you find a class does not suit you.
A weekly newsletter, the Shepherd’s Staff, is published each week class is in session. It contains updates on luncheon speakers, lunch menus, current class updates and other news. Pick up your copy from the lobby upon arrival. Also check the board for last minute changes in scheduling.
